Photographer finds joy capturing nature
Seven years ago, Wink Gaines needed to find peace. Her husband was facing an illness, her parents were aging, and she was a mother to two men in college.
So, as she cared for everyone in her life, she took care of herself, by picking up a camera.
“I picked up the camera,” she said. “Being in nature and finding solstice, it’s kind of a hobby.”
Gaines had experience taking pictures. She had graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and began working at The Valdese News, a weekly newspaper owner by her uncle, J.D. Fitz, in 1978.
